Kabelvaag

- An old fisherman's and trade town
The idyllic fisherman's town Kabelvaag is located in the midst of Lofoten, and is surrounded by the mighty Lofoten mountain peaks. With its strategic location and closeness to huge fish resources, Kabelvaag has been an important centre of trade, for the northern part of Norway, in periods since the time of the Vikings. The climate conditions in Lofoten are also quite nice: The fog can be thick at the outside of Lofoten, the wind can sweep through the streets of Bodø and it can be cold in the inner fjord of Narvik. Kabelvaag is well protected from most harsh weather conditions by the surrounding mountain peaks and mild coastal climate.

New establishments and restored old buildings have created a new renaissance in Kabelvaag. The old fisherman's town is today one the very finest along the Norwegian coast. The harbour has been enlarged and mudded, the coating with natural stones of the "market place" and the building of new peers around the harbour has strengthened the total impression of this old "town".

Lofotdykk is located only about 150 metres away from the centre of Kabelvaag. Here you will find restaurants, pubs, shops, a bank and a post office. In walking distance you will also find cultural sites like the Lofoten aquarium, Gallery Espolin Johnsen and the Lofoten museum along with numerous possibilities for hiking and mountaineering. In the weekends you can also enjoy a good nightlife.

Close as Kabelvaag is to the capital of Lofoten Svolvaer, commuting is well taken care of. There are 9200 inhabitants in Vaagan county, whereas 2000 in Kabelvaag. Lofotdykk is the perfect starting point for exploring the rest of Lofoten: The Viking museum at Borg, the WillSmith in Sund, Nusfjord, the Refsvik Cave or the Cliff walls at the outside of Lofoten.

Welcome to Vaagan and Kabelvaag !

Lofoten

- The kingdom of the Killer Whales and the Sea Eagles
A "wall" of islands stretching into the northern sea with 1000 metre high mountain peaks makes up Lofoten. Together there are approximately 2000 islands with steep mountains which stretches far out into the sea: Called the "Lofoten Wall". This bedrock is about 3 billion years old, and thereby the oldest in the world. The view of Lofoten is Grand, and amongst others it enchants many artists and painters.

It is thousands of years since man first settled in this area, and they have since lived of fishing and hunting. Fishing is still the major business in this area. Everey spring, huge amounts of cod rounds the tip of Lofoten to multiply in the "Vestfjord bassin". Right outside Kabelvaag, these wandering cod's make their natural stop in the Austnesfjord.

The Vestfjord is special by several means:
The herring which multiplies in autumn, has also for the last twenty years been swimming through this bottle neck which is naturally there in between the mainland and Lofoten. This creates a "Klondyke" amongst the fishers: Ocean going vessels, local fishermen and the worlds largest concentration of Killer Whales fight over what is called the "silver of the ocean" - the Herring.

A sonar catches a carpet of fish. You as a scuba diver can see this fight in between the Killer Whales and the Herring through your diving mask.......

More and more tourists are visiting this land of adventures with its reddish midnight sun and winter nights with its amazing polar light. The nature of Lofoten is both wild and gentle, and the inhabitants have been coloured by this fabulous landscape through thousands of years.

This is where it happens! Throughout the years Lofoten has naturally become the mid point of the Northern Norway when it comes to art, culture and business. Vaagan County arranges both world championship in cod fishing, the "Lofoten adventure", "Lofot Fishing", blues festivals, different markets, cultural arrangements and more.

The only limitation to adventures is your imagination!
